Radio 1's "One Big Sunday"
Manchester, Heaton Park
24th June 2001
Manchester's Heaton Park was the scene for this, the second of Radio 1's One Big Sunday events, hosted this Sunday 24th June by Jamie Theakston, Tim Westwood and Sara Cox.

With temperatures in the 30's and no clouds in sight, Heaton Park was set for a music extravaganza that future One Big Sundays will be hard to top!
The artist line-up alone was impressive to say the least, performing at the show would be former spice girl, Emma Bunton, talented artist and producer in his own right, Wyclef Jean, and lets not forget Muse, Mis-Teeq, Sugababes, Outkast and Usher
Outkast without a doubt lyrically and musically we couldn't fault them, performing the massive hit Ms Jackson and So Fresh, however they seemed to have no clue when it came to dress sense, The out fits were great but perhaps not when it's 30 degrees in the sun, one band member insisted on wearing the largest furriest pink trousers he could find.
Sugababes were the next act on, as you will all know Sugababes consist of three talented young ladies Siobhan Donaghy, Keisha Buchanan and Muyta Buena although looking slightly nervous to be performing in front of an estimated 60 thousand people they performed Overload and Run for Cover with great ease.

Following Sugababes came Usher performing U Remind Me and Pop Ya Collar he wowed the fans with some nifty dance moves, in fact all the cleaver routines which he's known for. (Later in the evening Wyclef showed that he had some moves up his sleeve too...)
Next on was Muse, clearly taking notes from Outkast's trousers, Mark of Muse walked on stage sporting his latest Pink spiky hairdo. Now Muse are notorious tour kings, this month alone they will be touring France Germany, Italy and Japan, but not with their own tour, rather they are favouring radio events and festivals, chaps we look forward to you having a dedicate Muse tour, but for now if you're a Muse fan, full festival tour dates are available on there official site.

Emma Bunton was next to perform. Now you may have heard in the press that she was booed during her performance, this couldn't be further from the truth, she received a fantastic warm welcome from the Manchester bunch, Emma performed "What I Am and" and "What Took You So Long", speaking with her directly after her performance she was clearly excited to be at Radio 1's event and was "loving every minute". Which pretty much sums it all up...
Alesha, Sabrina, Su Elise aka Mis-Teeq gave a polished performance of "Why" and "All I Want". For a whole lot of photos taken of Mis-Teeq check out our new gallery section, in the upcoming weeks more and more photos will become available from all of the One Big Sunday events, so stay tuned.

Wyclef Jean appeared last, which would prove to be a wise decision, (find out why later), prior to going out on stage Wyclef backstage worked up a sweet by doing a complete exercise routine, perhaps someone should have told him it was 30 degree out, but seriously Wyclef was here at Heaton to really enjoy himself, and it was obvious from his first track (he performed, "A Perfect Gentlemen") that he wanted the crowd to have the complete experience. After Wyclef performed his last song for the Live broadcast "Gone Till November", many thought the show was over, in fact they were no where near it, after Radio 1 One Big Sunday finished broadcasting at 4pm Wyclef continued on performing a medley of tracks including early Michael Jackson songs combined with a bit of unique freestyle.
But if the performing of all these extra tracks hadn't got the crowd going then what Wyclef did next would surely have them thinking, he proceeded to climb up the outside of the stage rigging while holding a microphone and singing! His bodyguards standing beneath him looked on waiting to catch him just in case he fell. Luckily all was well and Wyclef returned to the stage, with the relief of all clear to see.
So lets sum up this One Big Sunday experience, well is was One of a kind, It was pretty dam Big, and it was definitely a Sunday never to forget. So if you weren't there we hope you had a really good excuse, There's still five shows this summer, check out our event listings for full details or visit Radio 1's One big Sunday mini site.
